The Chambers Diversity Award: The Legal Recognition of Same-Sex Relationships Guide, by Jones Day

Launched in January 2015 as an extension of our successful Chambers Women in Law initiative, we are delighted to announce that the winner of our inaugural Chambers USA Diversity Award is the Legal Recognition of Same-Sex Relationships Guide. A firm-wide pro bono effort established by Jones Day, the Guide is a free, online tool which summarizes the legal recognition of same-sex relationships in all U.N. recognized countries worldwide. Successfully linking both pro bono and LGBT initiatives, this is an example of a successful, practical and meaningful diversity initiative. 

The Outstanding Contribution to the Legal Profession Award: Maureen E. Mahoney, of Latham & Watkins LLP

The founder of Latham & Watkins's Supreme Court and appellate practice, Mahoney has long been a leading light in US appellate law. Clients are unanimous in their praise of her tactical and advisory skill, reinforcing her status as a unique individual in the Supreme Court: "There's no one quite like her. There's nobody who can compel or convince the Court to go their way like she does." Mahoney has a truly impressive record before various courts in exceedingly high profile cases and consistently stands out as a star among stars, with one peer proclaiming: "She just walks on water - we mere mortals are in awe of her!"

The Lifetime Achievement Award: Peter Allan Atkins, of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP & Affiliates

A partner at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, Peter Allan Atkins is one of the foremost authorities on corporate and securities law. With a deal sheet that would be the envy of any lawyer, Atkins still finds time to act as a board member of A Better Chance and the Dean's Advisory Board at Harvard Law School. This illustrious practitioner can be summed up by one long-time client, who states: "His judgement, the way he handles clients, and the way he deals with extremely complicated deals and people are truly extraordinary. There are very few people who have been around as long, done as much and are as important to the overall landscape as Peter. He is truly a professional's professional."
