2015 TAPPI Corrugated Box and Linerboard Medium Manufacturing Course

Increase your understanding of the corrugating process, and linerboard and medium performance properties and manufacturing, in order to improve corrugating box performance and runnability.

This introductory- to intermediate-level will cover:

  • The corrugating process, with the focus on corrugating equipment and operations, and how to achieve a stronger bond between the liner and medium.
  • Linerboard & medium properties and tests; how these relate to the final box performance
  • Overview of linerboard and medium mill manufacturing.

A full day dedicated to corrugated with an emphasis on “How it works” is designed for personnel who desire a solid working knowledge on corrugator operations, quality inspections, process troubleshooting, and improving runability. This introductory to intermediate program will benefit sales representatives, all corrugated and  P&P personnel, as well as veteran personnel.

Topics covered in the full day overview will include:

  • Why corrugated and what are the components
  • Overview of a complete corrugator, operation and machine functions
  • Mechanics of the bond
  • Introduction to starch, terms, usage, application, and testing
  • Proper temperatures for bond and board flatness
  • Moisture content in paper and combined board
  • Board quality inspections on the corrugator (operator checks), trouble-shooting, and corrections
    • Glue line analysis
    • How to read combined board for best bond and running conditions

A half day overview will be most beneficial to Corrugators, and anyone needing an introductory level overview /review of the P&P processes used to produce linerboard and medium. The focus will be on how these operations affect liner and medium quality and performance.

The course also features a half day overview of liner and medium properties and tests that will provide valuable knowledge you won't be able to find in in any other course. You'll learn how these tests and properties affect the corrugating process and  final box quality. The course will also cover how these properties and tests are affected by the pulp and papermaking process.

Topics covered in the half day overview of Linerboard and Medium Mill Manufacturing include:

    • Examining the  effects of fiber raw materials
    • Pulp mill operations
    • Recycling
    • Stock prep refining
    • Strength and other additives
    • Fourdrinier and multiply wet end operations effects on sheet structure & properties
    • Twin wire gap forming
    • Pressing and drying effects on properties
    • Size press chemical addition
    • Calendering

LEARNING OUTCOMES

After successfully completing this course, you should be able to:

  • Describe corrugating manufacturing processes, equipment, variables, and terminology, in order to improve operations and product quality.
  • Better understand linerboard properties and tests, and some of the variables that affect the tests.
  • Describe basic linerboard and medium manufacturing processes, equipment,  and terminology; and how processes affect linerboard and medium sheet structure and properties in order to better troubleshoot variations in product quality.
