Cities are key drivers of economic growth, providing businesses with a vast base of customers, suppliers, and capital. Today Southeast Asia’s cities account for more than 65 percent of the region’s GDP, and more than 90 million people are expected to move to urban areas by 2030.

Smaller cities with populations of less than five million – as well as urban areas with populations of less than 500,000 – are growing at an extremely fast pace, and many second-tier and emerging cities are outperforming primary cities in terms of GDP contribution. How important are second- and third-tier cities in firms’ market entry or expansion strategies?

An understanding of how these various density environments will continue to evolve can enable firms to devise informed business and investment plans for the mid- to long-term. As people move away from rural areas and into cities in the search for better job prospects, their incomes, along with their purchasing power, tend to rise. How can consumer-facing companies make the most of these new opportunities? What trends are emerging in terms of demand for consumer goods and services? Why might corporates consider city-specific approaches, as opposed to a national view of a particular market?

The Financial Times and Nielsen will gather the region’s top consultants, economists and C-suite decision-makers, for a leadership forum to explore the implications of these changing trends and patterns for business leaders across a range of sectors and industries.
