Special Needs Group - working with people who are lgbti identified in aged care services

Special Needs Group:

Delivering LGBTI inclusive services

The experience of many Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Intersex (LGBTI) people throughout their lifetime often includes rejection, persecution and discrimination. Many older LGBTI people hide their sexual orientation, sex or gender identity on a daily basis because they fear discrimination.

Aged care management and staff who attend this afternoon seminar can expect to learn about key understandings, resources and a felt sense for this special needs group.

Attendees will hear presentations from three different perspectives.

Adrian Eisler, ACON will provide the background to this special needs group. What are the sensitivities? What is a Rainbow Tick? Recent conferences held. LGBTI Ageing and Aged Care Strategy Consultations Report. Resources available, challenges, changing attitudes. What can providers do and what do they do well? Is there an issue of identification and how is this managed?  What about privacy issues?

Sally Lambourne, Senior Project Manager, Alzheimer's Australia NSW will present the results of her recent research with Val’s Café on the experiences and needs of LGBTI people.

Andrew Collins, Regional Director Western NSW, The Benevolent Society From his experience working in residential and home care, Andrew will trace what are some of the resident fears and ways he has seen them handled.  What does inclusive and accessible service delivery mean? What else would he like to see done?
