2018 Family Violence Prevention Symposium

Welcome

We are proud to present the third biennial Southern California Permanente Medical Group Family Violence Prevention Symposium!

The planning committee has put together an extraordinary and ambitious agenda focused on the experience of family violence and trauma throughout the lifespan.  We are very excited to have as our keynote speaker Dr. Nadine Burke-Harris, a pediatrician and leader in the movement to transform how we respond to Adverse Childhood Experiences. Dr. Burke-Harris is Founder and CEO of the Center for Youth Wellness, and also has done a TED Talk that has been viewed more than 3 million times. Her work has been profiled in the New Yorker, in the best-selling book, How Children Succeed: Grit, Curiosity, and the Hidden Power of Character, and in the documentary, “Resilience.”  She will be speaking directly after a viewing of this film at the symposium.

In addition, we will hear from Ann Corwin, PhD, also known as “The Parenting Doctor”, in “Understanding the Emotions Before the Explosions”, building resilience through Social Emotional Learning techniques.

Also, Dr. Bonnie Olsen, PhD, a geropsychologist and national expert in elder mistreatment, will be speaking on the problem of generational abuse in caregivers of patients with dementia.

Mary D. Fan, Professor of Law, University of Washington Law School, will give us an evidenced-based, practical presentation on the relationship between firearms and family violence and how addressing “ordinary” acts of violence may prevent the rare, but devastating acts of “extraordinary” violence, homicide-suicides and mass killings.

Our roster of cutting-edge faculty includes leaders and speakers from around Southern California and beyond who are leading the way in addressing family violence in the healthcare system.
