Monthly Meeting 2017-12 (Dec)
Thursday 12/14/2017 11:30 am - 1:00 pm
The December Monthly Meeting of the IIA-Wichita Chapter.
Topic: Big Debacles: Financial Performance, Incentives, and Culture; what can we learn?
Speaker: Dr. Malcom Harris, Professor of Finance at Friends University
Synopsis: Behind every business disaster there lies a story and for each story there are root causes. Take the billion dollar trading losses: Nick Lesson brought down Barrings with his Yen derivative bets. Jerome Kerviel lost Societe General $7.2 billion and The London Whale put a $6 billion dent in JPMorgan-Chase's "fortress balance sheet". What lies behind these internal control lapses? Enron and Worldcom are poster children for financial fraud. What do they have in common with Fannie Mae? Do any of these have any common features with the sex scandal that caused Weinstein Company to collapse?
