Mr. Freeman leads the Sustainability Research Department and directs the company research and analysis as well as shareholder advocacy and public policy work of the largest family of sustainable and responsible mutual funds in the U.S. From 2003 until joining Calvert in early 2006, he led Burson-Marsteller's Global Corporate Responsibility practice advising multinationals on policy development, stakeholder engagement and communications strategies related to human rights, labor rights and sustainable development. During the Clinton Administration he served in three positions as a political appointee in the State Department, most recently as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor from 1999 to early 2001. In that capacity, he led the development of the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights, the first human rights standard forged by governments, companies and NGOs for the extractive sectors. Previously he was Senior Advisor to Under Secretary of State for Economic and Business Affairs Stuart Eizenstat, and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs and Chief Speechwriter for Secretary of State Warren Christopher. Earlier in his career he was Manager-Corporate Affairs for General Electric and a presidential campaign aide to former Vice President Walter Mondale. He currently serves on the boards of Oxfam America, The Revenue Watch Institute, the Institute for Human Rights and Business, the Global Network Initiative, the Genocide Intervention Network and EG Justice, and represented Oxfam on the board of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) from 2007-09. Mr. Freeman earned an MA in Modern History from the University of Oxford where he an English-Speaking Union Churchill scholar at Balliol College and an AB in History from the University of California at Berkeley. A member of the Council on Foreign Relations, he is also a frequent lecturer and media commentator on corporate responsibility, human rights and U.S. foreign policy.

Michel Gelobter is Chief Green Officer at Hara and one of the country’s leading climate strategists, having worked for more than 25 years in business, policy, research, and advocacy on environmental and social policy. Michel is Founder and Chairman of the Board of Cooler, a for-profit social venture whose mission is to connect every consumer purchase to a solution for global warming, and is also on the Board of Directors of CERES and the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC). Prior to Cooler, Michel was President of Redefining Progress, the think-tank that helped design the world’s most aggressive climate legislation which was signed into California law in August of 2006. Michel also founded and directed the Environmental Policy Program at Columbia University, worked for the U.S. House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee, was Director of Environmental Quality for the City of New York, and served as an Assistant Commissioner for its Department of Environmental Protection.

From 1992 to 1996, Dr. Athayde Marques was Chairman and CEO of ICEP, the Portuguese government agency for inward and outward investment, export and tourism. This includes working with other concerned investors on company dialogues, shareholder proposals, and proxy voting. He also works on public policy and media outreach for Walden. As a leading authority on corporate responsibility and ESG investing, Tim is actively involved in marketing Walden’s investment objectives at public speaking events and in developing client relationships. Prior to joining Walden, Tim served as Executive Director of the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility (ICCR) for 24 years. ICCR coordinates corporate responsibility programs for 275 institutional investors committed to using shareholder advocacy to influence corporate conduct and promote social justice. Tim previously served as the Chair of the Social Investment Forum, an industry trade group, for five years, and presently serves as Chair of their Public Policy Committee. In 2007, Tim was named as one of the top 100 most influential people in Business Ethics by Ethisphere Institute. In 2008, he was elected as a Board member of the General Board of Pension and Health Benefits of the United Methodist Church, one of the largest pension funds in the U.S. Tim also serves on the boards of Shared Interest, a South Africa development fund, World Neighbors, an international development organization, and is a member of the Kimberly-Clark Sustainability Advisory Board. Previously, Tim served on the Domini Social Equity Fund Board for ten years. He also served on the Calvert New Africa Fund Board and chaired the Advisory Council for the Calvert Group’s social investment funds. Tim earned a B.A. from the University of Toronto and a Masters of Divinity degree from Union Theological Seminary.
