Pacific Issues for Consideration
Pacific peoples have identified a range of issues to be considered for the WCIP2014. These issues include:
• The doctrine of discovery and decolonisation
• Climate change and the emerging crisis of survival for vulnerable Pacific Islands
• Health equality
• Lands, territories and resources, exploitation, devastation, commercial exploration and cultural heritage protection
• Violence against women
• Treaties and militarisation
• A status report on the State of Indigenous Peoples in the Pacific region to be tabled at the WCIP2014 in New York in September 2014
Global Issues for Consideration
A number of structural or underlying issues have been identified for discussion at this meeting. They include:
• Review of involvement by Indigenous Peoples in the UN System - the status of Indigenous Peoples
• The 1st and 2nd Decade of Indigenous Peoples
ₒ What has worked and what is not working?
ₒ What have we learnt?
ₒ The way forward
• The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples:
ₒ Four key themes:
• Self-Determination
• Participation in decision-making including free, prior and informed consent
• Respect for and protection of culture
• Equality and non-discrimination
• The creation of Institutions to provide mechanisms for the implementation of the Declaration
• Recommend the UN Declaration become a Treaty and/or include an optional protocol
