About the Event: NSW How organisational culture turns good fundraising into great fundraising

At this year’s FIA conference, Alan Clayton spoke about ‘Great Fundraising’ and great fundraising organisations.

But what makes a great fundraising organisation?

Answer: organisations that put their mission at the heart of all they do and achieve stellar fundraising results to do it.

Using Alan’s definition, incremental and modest changes to an organisation’s fundraising does not qualify as ‘great fundraising’; nor what makes a great fundraising organisation. Modest fundraising fails to inspire donors and in turn fails to support the organisation’s mission and purpose…

From a raw fundraising perspective, a truly great fundraising organisation is one that has compounding increases in the amount of money raised—often by a factor of four, five, six or more…

In Australia, there are few charities and for-purpose organisations that meet this criteria. However, one of those that did was Médecins Sans Frontières Australia.

During John Burns' nine years at Médecins Sans Frontières, he oversaw income results rising from $15 million to almost $80 million. This is a significant achievement, and certainly qualifies Médecins Sans Frontières as a great fundraising organisation. From 1994 to today, Médecins Sans Frontières Australia sent almost eleven times the number of doctors, nurses, medical-allied professionals and logisticians to the field.
